Hello Everyone! Welcome to our Primary 1 Home Learning page.

As I’m sure you will appreciate most of what we provide for class activities in P1 is sensory based. This means that we use objects, smells, sounds, images and, if appropriate, tastes, to help support your children in getting as clear an understanding of the topics and lessons we are covering.

I will be making phone calls to you on Thursday or Friday. This week these will come up without displaying a number. It’s so lovely to hear what you have been up to and just to say Hello!

Our Topics

Summer 2: Bears

During Summer 2, P1 focused our learning around the topic ‘Bears’ (as well as Summer). The following resources listed under Summer 2 will support home learning around this topic.

Literacy

Stories

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Activities

'We're Going on a Bear Hunt.'

You could make marks in sand using different tools such as a folk, paint brush, glue stick, straw, pastry brush, pencil and if you don’t have any of those just use your finger. If you don’t have any sand you could use flour, rice or lentils in a tray, paper or even the table.

Sorting Hot and Cold weather clothing. Why don’t you find some clothes at home and sort them out for cold or hot weather? Maybe a jumper, wellingtons, cap, bobble hat, sandals, sunglasses, coat, shorts, sun cream, scarf, ear muffs, waterproofs etc. To make it more fun use a grown ups clothing and dress up! Take some photos and send them into school via the Office email address. We would love to see! :)

Grown ups: As you work together to explore the clothing and sort it into hot and cold weather take your time to explore the items. You could model the sign from the Makaton video or discuss what each item is used for. Sunglasses protect our eyes from the sun. Wellingtons keep our feet dry in the rain etc. We don’t mind as long as you have fun!

Developing Early Reading Skills

Take a look at our speaking and listening activities. Choose a topic; Environmental Sounds, Transport, Animal Sounds or Musical Instruments. Can you hear the different sounds? Are they loud or quiet? Can you notice when the sound changes? (discriminating between sounds) Where possible I have added videos that include signs so you can use these alongside the sounds and begin to use the sign relating to what you can hear. When you go outside why don’t you go on a sound walk? Listen to the sounds in your environment. What can you hear? Once you get home you could look for the Makaton signs on the internet or I can add them onto the early communication section of our web page. Let us know what you have been up to. We would really like to know!

Transport Signs Video

Its a little early for Summer but it is one of our topics and we have had some beautiful weather so I thought I would add this summer playdough recipe early. The recipe is linked below and the picture gives you some fun creative ideas.

Exploring playdough helps develop the muscles in our hands and fingers ready for holding tools and equipment for mark making, cutting and even cutlery.

As well as creating with the playdough you could you use it to develop your fine motor skills: Can you pat, roll, squash, squeeze, press, and pinch the playdough?

With an adult maybe you could use some children’s scissors to cut the playdough.

Maths

Number Songs

In Primary 1 we really enjoy number songs. Please find some familiar songs that support our learning that you could listen to at home.

Five Little Firefighters

Three Little Monkeys

Activities

Matching socks: Can you find a matching pair? Start with 3 plain colours. When you can match those change to 3 simple patterns. How many pairs have you matched?

Developing Early Communication

Makaton Signing

In P1 we use a total communication approach to all our learning. Please find some Makaton signs for days of the week and colours that you could use with your child at home.

I have attached a number of Communicate in Print symbols which may be of use to you. We encourage children to make an exchange for something they would like such as a segment of orange of a piece of apple to support communication. Alongside this we model the vocabulary and Makaton sign.

Rainbows

Signing Colours

As part of our learning around Colours in Spring 1, we really enjoyed singing ‘It’s a Rainbow’ and practising our signs. Rainbows are now everywhere so I thought it would be nice to add the video to our page. Why don’t you have a go together at home :)
Unfortunately the signs are not available on this video but I have attached a link to the Makaton signs on the right hand side of the page.

Rainbow Challenge

Can you create your own rainbow? Take a look at the ideas on the link below and maybe you could even put one in your window. Why don’t you go out for a walk with your family and have a look out for any other rainbows.

Birthday Card Challenge for Captain Tom Moore

Captain Tom Moore has been raising money to help people by doing laps of his garden. He has so far raised over 26 million pounds. WOW! It is his 100th Birthday very soon (30.04.20). Why don’t you create him a card using lots of different media and materials. You can even send the card or picture to him!

Address: Captain Tom Moore, C/O Marston Moretaine Post Office, 67 Bedford Road, Marston Mortaine, Bedford, MK43 0LA.

In P1 we enjoy really enjoy songs! Here are some songs related to our topics and others that are familiar to us. Some of the videos include signs so you can continue to practise at home.

The Transport Song

The Wheels on the Bus

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Other familiar songs include:

How’s the weather?

7 Days of the week

Here are some links to useful websites:

These are some fantastic websites where you can get further fun and interactive ideas to do together at home. This is not a full list and I’m sure many of you will already have other sites where you go to get ideas as well as other suggestions coming through social media.

Previous Topics

Here you will find some key information and stories from previous topics just incase you had been enjoying them.

Summer 1

During Summer 1, P1 focused our learning around the topic ‘Transport (as well as Summer and Holidays). The following resources listed under Summer 1 will support home learning around this topic.

Stories

The Train Ride

Activites

Exploring mark making using toy vehicles. You could choose some of your toy cars, trains or any vehicles and make some marks by driving them through paint. You could also attach pens to the back of the vehicles and drive them across the paper or chalks to the back of vehicles and use them on the patio outside to create different marks. My favourite idea is to create a ramp as in the picture and run the toy cars through paint down the ramp to create marks. If you have a go why don’t you take a photograph and send it into the office so we can see what you have been up to!

Creative Ideas: Transport

Thank you to Miss Barlow for the above ideas! :)
