English
In English, we are looking at different explorers and focusing on Pirates and Christopher Columbus.
Below are some pirate stories for you to listen to. Listen to how the pirates and their adventures are described; what colour is the sea? What does the pirate ship look like? Are the pirates singing any songs? What is their treasure?
Pirates always used treasure maps like the ones below to lead them on their adventures. Use a wet tea bag to stain paper and leave it to dry. Then use pens or cut and stick landmarks on your map that you’d like your pirates to see on their travels.
Use the template below to design your own pirate flag. Can you think of a pirate name for yourself or your ship?
If you have any sand, put some on a flat surface and practice your letter formations in it.

Science
We will be looking at plants and how they grow in Science.
If you can get some cress seeds from the supermarket, have a look at the seeds, what colour are they? How big are they? Do they smell? What do you think will happen to them? What do they need?
Follow the instructions to plant the seeds in a little yoghurt pot on some wet cotton wool, make sure you water them and check them every day.
Watch them grow each day! What colour are they?
If you have a garden or any plants, help your family look after them and think about what they need to grow. Can you go on a walk and look at different plants and flowers? What colour are they? How tall are they?
If you have a printer, use the bingo game below to play and learn some important vocabulary.

Maths
We’re going to focus on sorting activities in Maths to begin with.
Use your toys to help you.
Can you sort bricks by colour? Can you sort big and small toys?
Technology
Our theme for cooking this half term is potatoes!
Potatoes are a really versatile ingredient you can use to make lots of different meals.
I’ve put some recipes below for you to try with adult support at home.
Don’t forget to listen to our Food Technology song before you start!
Potato Wedges
Ingredients
- 1 kg potato (cut into wedges)
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp sea salt
- 1 tbsp dried oregano or any herbs you like! (optional)
Method
- Preheat oven to 220°C fan-forced. Line a baking tray with baking paper and set aside.
- Place the potatoes and oil in a large bowl and toss to coat.
- Sprinkle the salt and dried oregano over the potatoes and toss to make sure all pieces are coated well.
- Lay in a single layer on the baking tray. Bake for 40 minutes, stopping after 20 minutes to turn the wedges.
Mashed Potato
Ingredients
- 2kg Maris Piper potatoes
- 50g unsalted butter
- 100ml milk
Method
- Peel the potatoes and chop in to pieces of a similar size.
- Cook in a large pan of boiling salted water over a medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until tender.
- Drain in a colander and leave to steam dry for a couple of minutes, then tip back into the pan and mash well.
- When the potatoes are almost smooth, add half the butter, the milk and a good pinch of sea salt and black pepper.
- Mash again until smooth, adding a splash more milk to loosen, if needed, then taste and adjust the seasoning, if needed.
Potato and Leek Soup
Ingredients
- 450g leeks
- 50g butter
- 6 stalks thyme
- 2 bay leaves
- 450g potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1L water
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 50ml cream
Method
- Peel leeks, removing the tough green part at the top and slice the whites thinly. Place in a colander and wash well, removing any dirt.
- Heat the butter in a heavy-based saucepan and once it has melted and begun to bubble, add the leeks. Cook for a few minutes before throwing in the thyme and bay leaves.
- Once the leeks are soft, about 10 minutes all up, add the potatoes and cook for a couple more minutes. Add the water and salt and pepper to taste and simmer until the potatoes are nice and soft (about 15 minutes).
- Transfer the mixture in batches to a blender and puree until smooth. Stir through the cream.
French
Our topic in French is colours.
Can you name all the colours below? Ask an adult to help you, they can say the French word for you to copy.
There is also a video to help!
