The intent of the Careers Information, Education, Advice and Guidance (CIEAG) programme at Tor View is to ‘provide information, guidance, workplace experience and encounters which will help students make positive decisions for their future whilst encouraging a culture of lifelong learning’ (taken from Curriculum Mapping Documents – INTENT statement). As such for some students the focus is much more on basic life-skills and their transitions will lead up to residential care choices, other students may be looking at functional skills and their transitions will lead up to vocational choices or further study. Although learners are taught within Key stages the mapping is specific to year groups to ensure that learners are receiving content and interventions at the relevant points. For example: Year 7’s will be having transition input relevant to their introduction to secondary school, whereas Year 9’s will be having transitional input relevant to option choices, however due to being taught in key stage ability groups this will be at a level that is appropriate for them. Students are also given opportunities for work experience and work placements relevant to them and their interests.
Mapping provided for CEIAG provides an overview of the activities which make up the provision for each Key Stage. You can find this mapping within the curriculum sections of the website as well as within the Careers section (links are also provided below). It outlines how different elements of the programme are to be delivered through the curriculum, extracurricular activities or by Form Tutors. Teachers and Form tutors are then responsible for ensuring the content is included through the suggested means. All teachers are expected to incorporate CEIAG into their planning, focussing specifically on Gatsby benchmarks 2, 4, 5 & 6. (see last page of all mapping documents for outline of how this is done for each Key Stage). The Gatsby Benchmarks are a set of recommended targets for schools in regards to Careers & Enterprise.
As part of our CEIAG programme students take part in Careers & Enterprise Week each year. Some years students focus on the Enterprise element, creating goods or services which are then sold on at an Enterprise Fair. In other years the focus is much more on the Careers element, and in others there may be a combination of both. This year we are focussing on Careers with a programme of work experience afternoons for KS3, KS4 and KS5 to take part in. Experiences have included:
  • Hospitality - utilising the Garage Cafe
  • Fitness - learning about jobs in a gym
  • Retail - utilising the Valley College Retail Space
  • Service - including Car Washing
  • Horticulture & Site Maintenance - including gardening, window cleaning and litter picking
In addition students have been learning about how to develop their own skills and interests and learning about different industries in order to inform their future choices. Students have thoroughly enjoyed the week - as evidenced in the photos - and have valued the time to explore different avenues available to them.
