4OB pupils took part in ceramics and learnt about the basic techniques for slab building work - rolling out clay the same thickness - the clay needed to be as thick as their little finger. The pupils learn how to use a kidney. One pupil knew what this ceramic tool was and why we call that particular tool a kidney - she said, 'It's because it's in the shape of a kidney and it's inside our bodies.' Pupils used excellent recall of prior knowledge within the lesson.
They described clay using the following words - hard/cold/soft/slippery/grey/heavy/muddy/squishy.
Pupils knew from previous sessions that clay comes from underground, that it goes to the clay factory to have stones taken out and is put into bags, where it is delivered to school.
We were extremely pleased with pupils' prior knowledge (sticky knowledge), skills and concentration when working with clay.
here they are with their completed one-off slab built plaques.
